This collection by Sushma Asur is not merely a book of poetry; it should be read as an ideological document representing a voice that has been unilaterally suppressed and distorted for centuries. For a long time, the Asur community was portrayed solely as figures fit for slaughter or as the vanquished; yet now, after centuries, Sushma—an Asur woman—stands up against that entire tradition with a powerful and fearless voice. She directly challenges the anti-Asur narratives embedded in ancient Vedas and Puranas, the religious traditions centered on the slaying of Asurs, and the racial and hegemonic narratives present in modern literature and art. This collection is a proclamation of that very challenge, stating unequivocally: “We are Asurs—and this is our truth.”
